The goal of this research include:
- developing a better understanding of
how concurrent activities and stimuli distract drivers and
impair performance on the main task of driving
- to identify principles that may
suggest methods of mitigating this distraction
When faced with multiple tasks, humans
appear to have a cognitive bottleneck that prevents certain
types of multitasking. Central bottleneck theory can be
summarized in the following diagram.
In testing, a simulator was used and the
subjects were faced with a driving task and another stimulus to
which they were required to make some sort of response.
This stimulus and response was varied to test multiple
modalities. Below is a picture of the simulator system.
