HAND MODELING WITH VOXEL DATA

Several silhouette images of the subject's hand was generated using a statistical background segmentation algorithm.

These silhouettes are in turn used to generate the voxel reconstruction of the hand.

For an extended hand, the fingertips can extracted easily by labeling the voxels by proximity to the central palm voxel. A tree is constructed where each node is a cluster of voxels with a common label and 26-neighbor of each other. Working from the leaves, choose the five largest clusters above a particular threshold. The tree is trimmed of small isolated clusters by reincorporating those clusters into the closest clusters with the same label.

The result are the five finger tips, which can be used as landmarks for hand model fitting.
